The Malibu Urgent Care Project
Burdge Architects is proud to announce our upcoming project: the transformation of the old Malibu Post Office into an upgraded Urgent Care Center. Originally built in the 1950s and vacant for decades, this well-known building will soon serve as a crucial healthcare hub for the Malibu community.
The Project
Led by Dr. Dan Katz and Dr. Lauren Pike, along with support from the community and the Friends of Malibu Urgent Care (a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that oversees the fundraising for the project), this new facility will undoubtedly make a long-lasting impact on Malibu residents and visitors alike. The renovation results in a substantial expansion for the current urgent care, moving the facilities from its current building, which occupies approximately 2,000 square feet, to the larger post office building, which increases the size to over 5,000 square feet. This new Urgent Care facility will include new patient care areas and be designed to treat more complex conditions, ensuring comprehensive care for the community. Additionally, the expanded facility will be equipped with advanced imaging equipment, such as CT and MRI machines, crucial for timely and accurate diagnostics. This upgrade is not only about increasing space but also about enhancing the quality and scope of medical services available.
Addressing a Critical Need
Malibu, home to over 13,000 residents and host to over 15 million visitors annually faces a significant healthcare challenge. With no hospital or medical facility within the city limits, the nearest emergency rooms are more than 15 miles away, translating to travel times of 35 to 60 minutes, depending on traffic. This lack of accessible healthcare has created a pressing need for a local facility capable of providing advanced medical services.
Malibu Urgent Care
Operating 365 days a year since 1994, Malibu Urgent Care is the only local facility staffed by Board-Certified Emergency Physicians for both adults and children. It offers emergency-level care at a fraction of the cost of hospital ER services, with minimal wait times. Despite its critical role, the current facility refers some patients to imaging centers or ERs outside of Malibu due to the lack of advanced imaging equipment like CT and MRI machines.
The new facility will not only preserve a piece of Malibu's history but also serve as a modern medical center that will be accessible to all who seek medical care. We are thrilled to partner on this project in order to provide Malibu residents and visitors with essential healthcare services, enhancing the well-being of the entire community.
