REBU Returns: Rebuilding Malibu & The Palisades Stronger Than Before
Rising After Woolsey: A Call to Rebuild Better
The Woolsey Fire was more than a disaster—it was a turning point. When the fire tore through Malibu in 2018, destroying over 500 homes, we saw firsthand the devastating impact on our neighbors, our community, and the place we call home.
In the aftermath, Burdge Architects took action. We didn’t just rebuild homes—we reimagined what fire-resilient living and support could be. We created REBU, an initiative dedicated to helping Malibu homeowners recover, rebuild, and fortify their homes against future wildfires. Since then, we’ve helped families restore more than 30 homes, incorporating fire-resistant materials, smarter design strategies, and sustainable solutions.
Now, with the recent Malibu and Pacific Palisades Fire, our mission continues. REBU returns, using the lessons we’ve learned to guide homeowners through the next phase of recovery.
Lessons from the Past, Innovations for the Future
The Palisades Fire reinforced what we’ve long believed—fire-resistant design is the way of the future for us in Southern California. With REBU, we’ve developed proven programs and systems that streamline the rebuilding process, integrating fire-resistant materials, sustainable design, and efficient construction strategies. Yet, as each wildfire teaches us more, we remain committed to evolving our approach—analyzing real-world outcomes, refining our methods, and continuously improving how we build for a safer, more resilient future.
Fire-Resistant Construction
Class A Roofing – Fire-rated materials like metal, tile, or asphalt shingles for maximum protection.
Ember Defense – Fine mesh screens on vents, sealed eaves, and non-combustible siding to block ember entry.
Fire-Resistant Windows – Dual-paned tempered glass with fire-rated frames, plus optional shutters.
Defensible Space – Landscaping that slows fire spread, using hardscaping, spaced trees, and drought-tolerant plants.
Fire Safety & Sustainability Integration
Sprinkler Systems – Fast-acting suppression to control fires before they escalate.
Fire-Resistant Features – Fire-rated caulking, non-combustible decking, and onsite water sources for added defense.
Efficient Irrigation & Native Landscaping – Drip irrigation and fire-smart plant choices to reduce risk and conserve resources.
By combining proven strategies with ongoing innovation, we’re not just rebuilding homes—we’re shaping a more resilient future for Malibu, the Palisades, and beyond.
Resources for Fire Victims
Recovering from a fire can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone. Beyond architecture, we’ve compiled a collection of essential resources to help homeowners rebuild with clarity and confidence.
State & Local Aid Programs – Grants, permits, and emergency assistance.
Insurance & Financial Guidance – Understanding your options and maximizing recovery funds.
Community Support Networks – Local organizations offering emotional and logistical support.
