Rebuilding Malibu – Our Commitment to Fire Recovery

It’s been nearly six years since the devastating wildfires swept through Malibu, leaving over 500 homes in ashes. While the scars of the tragedy still linger, the community's resilience shines brighter than ever. With the recent completion of another fire rebuild, marking a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment, we are proud to work alongside families to help restore their homes and their lives.

The Origins of the Re-BU Initiative

In the immediate days after the fire, Doug Burdge realized that one of the most immediate needs was fresh water and electricity.  Recognizing the immediate need for support and figuring that only locals might know the affected areas well enough to help, Doug and his colleagues rented a U-Haul, purchased as many generators as they could find, and dropped them off around the community to assist those without power in the aftermath of the disaster. Our hands-on approach extended beyond architecture – we wanted to help in any way we could.

Once the immediate needs were met, Doug and his team transitioned their focus to helping the many, many families and homeowners who would be starting the journey of trying to rebuild their homes.  In response, Burdge took swift action by creating a specialized division called Re-BU, which focused entirely on the recovery and rebuilding process.

Rebuilding Malibu, One Home at a Time

To date, Burdge has worked on over 30 Re-BU homes, having pulled permits for 13 homes, which are either under construction or completed, along with an additional 17 homes in progress. Among these projects is the restoration of the June Motel, a local landmark that symbolizes the resilience of the Malibu community. We’ve remained deeply involved in the rebuilding process, ensuring that each home reflects the quality and craftsmanship we’re known for.

The Bigger Picture: Rebuilding Stats

Malibu’s journey toward full recovery is ongoing. Out of the approximately 500 homes that were lost, the rebuilding process has been slow, hampered by complex permit requirements and insurance issues. While some homeowners have moved back into their rebuilt homes, a significant number are still navigating entitlements or are in the midst of construction.

A Continued Commitment

Burdge Architects has remained a steadfast partner in this effort, guiding families through the intricate rebuilding process from start to finish. With the recent completion of another home, we continue to push forward, ensuring that every project meets both client expectations and the stringent standards of fire-safe construction. The Re-BU division is not just a temporary initiative but a long-term commitment to the community. As homes continue to be rebuilt and families return, Burdge is committed to helping restore Malibu one home at a time.
