Douglas Burdge, AIA:

Douglas W. Burdge, AIA, is undoubtedly the signature architect of Malibu, as his firm has designed and built over 200 high-end estates in the Malibu region alone.

As comfortable designing a Mediterranean-style estate as a Modern home, Burdge has created breathtaking contemporary ocean-front retreats with floor-toceiling glass doors that open to reveal endless vistas of the sea and sky. Burdge is also well-known for designing in a Rustern style, a term he copyrighted, which means “a home, furniture or design style of rustic-modern influence.”

In addition to residential projects, Burdge and his team have designed award winning boutique hotels, restaurants, shopping centers and private clubs. Projects have been featured in publications such as Architectural Digest, The Wall Street Journal, Veranda, Robb Report, Luxe and Traditional Home. In addition to receiving several "Home of the Year" PCBC Golden Nugget awards, his residential work in Sun Valley has consistently landed his firm on Mountain Living Magazine’s annual Top Mountain Architects & Interior Designers list.

Douglas graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Southern California. He is currently a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art. The proud father of twin sons, Doug currently resides in Malibu with his wife Laura, where they also own a popular home decor store - Malibu Beach House, and are partners in a unique Bloody Mary mix called Malibu Mary.

Joseph earned his Bachelors Degree in Urban Studies and Planning from the University of California at San Diego while competing in collegiate level baseball as a catcher.

As a fourth generation member of the Los Angeles community Joseph naturally returned to his roots to pursue a career in design and development.  Prior to becoming a member of the Burdge and Associates team, Joseph learned the tricks of the trade by working as a City Planner for the City of Malibu for four years.

Mario Arellanes, Associate:

Mario was born in the small coastal town in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico.

Visits to the state capital and being exposed to the vernacular of homes, influenced him to pursue a degree in architecture. That brought Mario to Los Angeles, where he studied architecture at Southern California Institute of Architecture. He got an internship at Burdge in 2004.

He also spent a year abroad studying in Vico Morcote, Switzerland and traveling through Europe visiting many prominent architectural sites. Which has all influenced his passion for architecture. Upon obtaining his Bachelors of Architecture in 2007 he joined Burdge and Associates full time. In addition to overseeing various projects from initial studies to construction, Mario is also responsible for managing technology and integrating new software into the firm’s practice.
